Ms. Katherine Whittle
Friend, Daughter, Student
Youth Activist for Climate Justice and the Environment
Her Story
Ms. Katherine Whittle is only a recent high school graduate, yet she has accomplished very much in the environmentalism sphere. She was born in Hong Kong, China and grew up overlooking the South China Sea. Besides this early connection with water, Katherine attended annual beach gatherings with her family in her youth. Her connection to water and the earth, has made Katherine extremely passionate about climate justice and environmentalism. She has used her passion for good and established many sustainability programs across the Dover-Sherborn community.
Alongside Mrs. Dorothea Von Herder, Katherine worked on the Intergenerational Climate Project which has grown tremendously across Dover-Sherborn's youth.
Her Advice to Young People
As young person herself, Katherine advises that young people start small when they begin to fulfill their passion for environmentalism.
She explains that "you need to start small and work with what you have around you. Personally, I am more interested in the ocean but am surrounded by trees. So just look around and be inspired by what's around you."
She also recommends that young people work to develop their public speaking skills, as such skills are essential in advocacy.
Environmentalism
Although she is still early in her career, Katherine has achieved an abundance of titles and made great efforts in her environmentalism. While attending the Dover-Sherborn Regional High School, Katherine participated in the "Down to Earth Club" for four years and was the co-leader during her senior year. In this club, she worked on habitat restoration projects and various other outdoor projects.
At the High School, she co-chaired the Sustainability Task Force with Superintendent Dr. Andrew Keough in 2020-2021. During her senior year, she established a local youth environmental program, to involve the Dover-Sherborn Middle School in sustainability efforts.
Outside Interests
Outside of her environmentalism at the High School, Katherine enjoyed playing on the Dover-Sherborn High School Girls Tennis Team. In 2021, she was named a Tri-Valley League All Star for her division, which is a notable athletic achievement. She also enjoys writing and heavily contributed to the Dover-Sherborn High School Newspaper. In coming years, she plans on studying Environmental Law at the Trinity University of Texas and continuing her environmental efforts throughout her entire life.
Working with Audubon
Katherine has held various partnerships with Mass Audubon, a state-wide non-profit environmental organization dedicated to conservation of birds and their habitats. Among these partnerships, she has worked with the Broadmoor Sanctuary in Sherborn and organized an "Owl Day" initiative.
