Her Story
Mrs. Coughlin is the former Owner of Sherborn Wine & Spirits and the former Executive Director of the Islamic Studies Program at Harvard University.
Mrs. Coughlin graduated from Berea College, with a BA in History, Georgetown University, in Arab History, and Georgetown University, ABD with a Ph.D. in Islamic History. For many years, she used her degrees to direct the Islamic Studied Program at Harvard Univerity and take on other jobs in academia.
After her work at Harvard, she decided to buy the Sherborn Fine Wine and Spirits store as she wanted to engage in something beyond academia. This position was her favorite job she had ever taken on, because every day she was doing something different. This tasks included ordering products, meeting customers and sales reps, tasting new wines, bookkeeping, and supervising her employees. She loved learning about new wines and teaching others about them.
Outside of her work, she loves to read, write, garden, and participate in local politics.
Her husband, Shomo J. De, is her main inspiration in life. He describes her as “smart, funny, and headstrong!”
Her Connection to Sherborn
Mrs. Coughlin’s favorite thing about Sherborn is the people. She describes the town as a “very special place.” As a business owner, she had what she describes as “the good fortune to meet so many wonderful people, even people who were not customers."
Her Advice to Young People
She says that young people should “Travel, travel, travel before you get married! You don't need a lot of money-- Just pack a backpack and see the world. Those experiences have informed almost all of the important decisions in my life.”
