Her Story

Mrs. Pat Cassell could certainly be called “Mrs. Sherborn,” for her extensive involvement in town. She graduated from the Lake George High School and went on to earn her BA in Mathematics from Rosary Hill College in 1965. She moved to Sherborn in 1971, with her husband Doug and two children. Immediately, she became invested in the town, and became the Chair of the Cub Scouts, with meetings held at the Unitarian Church. At the time, a female Cub Scout Chair was rare, but she overcame the adversity and remembered it as being a “wonderful” experience.

Meanwhile, she involved herself with the development of the Sherborn Community Center and, on January 3, 1986, registered the building under the National Register of Historic Places; a significant achievement for the town. Today, the Community Center is one of 25 Nationally Registered historic buildings in Sherborn, and is affiliated with the official Historic District on the registry.

For three years, she sat on the CSA at the local Center School and redesigned the Children’s Fair of Sherborn.
Mrs. Cassell established the popular “Concerts on the Green” during the summer. Today, these concerts are still a valuable part of the community and continue to be enjoyed by residents every summer.
She later worked on the "Sort and Reuse Committee" at the Sherborn Center School, where she developed the recycling systems in town.

For nine years, she worked as the town photographer on the Dover Sherborn Press, in the “Sherborn Scene” Column, as well as for the Middlesex News. She took thousands of impressive photographs, many of which are treasured and have been preserved.

Her favorite things about Sherborn

Mrs. Cassell truly enjoyed her time in Sherborn. She loved how “family-oriented” residents are, and how supportive the community is. She also loved the beautiful and vast nature around town, especially Farm Pond.

The Farm Pond Advisory Committee

Mrs. Pat Cassell and her husband were more commonly known for their work on the Farm Pond Advisory Committee. On this committee, the couple worked tirelessly to improve the conditions at the pond and at the Sherborn Yacht Club.

In 2012, the couple heavily contributed to the renovation of the Eastern Pump House. This pump had previously been used by the Medfield State Hospital for water supply, but was discontinued for use in 1972. Thus, it had been deteriorating for quite some time and was in dire need of renovation. The Cassell's effort in working with the State Hospital to restore the pump will always be appreciated by the town.

Mrs. Cassell's husband, Douglas Cassell passed away in 2017, after a 48 year marriage. In response to his passing, Mrs. Cassell wished to honor him by creating a Memorial for him at Farm Pond. Today, the wheel-chair Ramp at the pond isdedicated to Douglas Cassell. Mrs. Cassell described this project as “very near and dear" to her heart.

Mrs. Pat Cassell passed away in November of 2021.
