A Short History of the Town of Sherborn, MA

Thank you to the Sherborn Historical Society, particularly Mrs. Betsy Johnson and Ms. Margo Powicki, for guidance in the information presented below.

A Short History of Sherborn

Sherborn, Massachusetts was settled during the 1650s by the English. The land was likely known as “Boggestow." However, the name is now being called into question as a result of an archaeological dig near Millis, MA that may indicate that it was named "Bogeston."

In 1674, Boggestow was renamed “Sherborne” and was established as an official town of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Throughout the 17th century, Sherborne remained a small farming town with little industrial development.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, several shops arose including those trading apparel, shoes, weaponry, and pitchforks.

In 1853, the Dowse Family opened and operated a Cider Mill.

In 1877, The Sherborn Reformatory for Women, a state correctional facility, was established where several prominent women of Sherborn worked as superintendents, physicians, and prison reform advocates. These women included the famous Clara Barton, Dr. Miriam Van Waters, and Dr. Eliza Maria Mosher.

In the early 1900s, Sherborn’s population grew, as families moved to the town. Many of such families took on service-related jobs and traded outside of Sherborn, in the markets of Boston and beyond. Although it was growing, the community remained small compared to surrounding towns.

The local Sherborn Cash store was opened in 1911 by the Jackson family. It was renamed Jackson’s store, and is known in the present day as “Sherborn Fuel." Today, Sherborn Fuel remains a popular convenience store and gas station in Sherborn. It has been owned by Alex Weatherall and Laura Weatherall since 2010, offering gas, food, drinks, and other goods to the town.
Today, Sherborn is a growing town, known for its wonderful schools, various small businesses, and beautiful nature.

The complete history of the town is being written by the Town Historian, Mrs. Betsy Johnson, of the Sherborn Historical Society. Thank you to the Sherborn Historical Society and to Mrs. Johnson for offering guidance in this collection.
