Ms. Elizabeth Johnston

Ms. Elizabeth Johnston
Director of the Sherborn Library since 1988
Sister, Writer, Friend, and Artist

Ms. Elizabeth Johnston is the current Director of the Sherborn Town Public  Library. She has held this position since 1988.

Ms. Johnston recieved her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College. She is a member of her professional honor's society, Beta Phi Mu, an international honor's society for library and information science and information technology. In 1988, she began as the Director of the Sherborn Library and has remained so ever since.

Her inspiring library facility and the support it receives from the community has been her favorite part of being involved with Sherborn. She knows that it would not feel the same if the library was not enhanced by its location that brings with it close-knit, neighborly values and a deep respect for heritage among community members.

Her work with the Sherborn library is motivated by her belief that individuals should always have immediate access to information, and pass their knowledge onto others in their community. These values have forged the way for her extensive work at the library.

A Typical Day

Ms. Johnston’s position as Director of the Sherborn Library involves the management of the library in many aspects. She spends every day hiring and training the staff of librarians, developing the budget, reporting to the elected Board of Library Trustees, and helping the Trustees develop and direct endowment funds.

She is also involved with attracting and leading the “Friends of the Sherborn Library:" a local non-profit group that raises funds for the Library.

The Friends of the Sherborn, per the Sherborn Library website:

"Is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1971. This dedicated group of Sherborn residents strives to bring valuable programming and enriching materials to the Sherborn community as well as to provide a welcoming space within the walls of the Library. The Friends work hand-in-hand with the Trustees of the Sherborn Library, who are responsible for the literal bricks and mortar of the Library."

She also manages the facility which is near the end of a long-term 12 million-dollar renovation and expansion of the 1971 library building. The funding from this renovation project was triggered by the award of a $3.6 million state grant that she wrote herself, matched by private funds raised, and municipal revenues.
