Ms. Jen Hawkins

Ms. Jen Hawkins
Sister, Mother, Aunt, and Friend
Math Education Consultant

Her Story

Ms. Jen Hawkins is a Math Education Consultant and a mother.

She received her Bachelor's Degree at the University of the Virgin Islands in Elementary Education with a concentration in mathematics. There, she notably received the Virgin Islands Rum Scholarship; a scholarship in honor of the late Knud Oliver Parris of  the Virgin Islands' Rum Industries. She received her Masters Degree in teaching mathematics at the Mount Holyoke College. After she was graduated from University, she began her career in math education. She spent twelve years as both an elementary school math teacher and a high school mathematics teacher. She also worked as a personal math coach for five years.

After some time, she decided to leave the traditional classroom and embark on her passion: student assessment. She worked at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to develop MCAS assessments in mathematics.

A Typical Day

On a typical day, she describes her varied work:

“Some days I'm teaching teachers, other days I'm writing math assessments or curriculum, and some days I'm working with students.”

Her favorite part about her job is when she sees her teaching methods “click” in her student’s brains; a rewarding and worthwhile part of her field. Despite the many tasks she takes on everyday, she is very passionate about her work.

When asked how she would describe herself in three words, she responded “Funny, creative, and diligent!”
Her favorite part about the Sherborn community is the nature, especially Farm Pond and the trails.

Her Advice to Young People

Ms. Hawkins recommends that young people seriously consider starting a career in education. She believes that working in education is rewarding and always interesting because it is always changing.  She adds that “summers are great," and something other careers do not necessarily offer.

Her Inspirations

Her personal inspirations growing up were Frederick Douglas, Jr. and Helen Keller. Both of these prominent historical figures heavily inspired her to respect education and diversity, which have shaped her into the educator she is today.
